Marjoram -
is a cousin of oregano, native to the Mediterranean, and is a commonly used spice in many parts of Europe.
Fresh leaves, whole or chopped, and dried whole, crushed or ground are used.
It is usually used in European cuisine and is added to fish sauces, mussels, seafood, sauces based on butter, salads, tomato sauces, mushroom sauces and eggplant.
It is usually added at the end of cooking to preserve the characteristic taste or as a decoration. Marjoram goes well with vegetables, including cabbage, potatoes and beans. Seeds are also used to flavor sweets and meat products.
In French cuisine, it is used, among others, in a bouquet of spices bouquet garni and along with other spices are used to flavor pork, fish and lamb dishes. In Greek cuisine, it is used for grilled meats, lamb and onions, garlic and wine. Italians use it in tomato sauces, pizza, fish and vegetable dishes. In Eastern Europe, it is added to grilled meats and stews of pepper, chili, nuts, fruit. In North Africa and the Middle East, marjoram is added to lamb, mutton, grilled dishes, vegetables and seafood. In the United States, it is used for poultry, pies, cheese, sausages, soups and salad dressing. In a word, it is widely used.
On the medical side, marjoram is used to treat swelling, convulsions, and intoxication. Traditionally, it has been used in tea to treat headaches, runny nose, clear the sinuses and have a calming effect. Marjoram is also used to relieve stomach aches and muscle aches and to improve circulation.
